Identity Theft Prevention Workshops

American Privacy Consultants, Inc.™

Registration Form

The American Bankers Association has selected Robert Douglas of American Privacy Consultants, Inc. to provide these half day multi-media workshops covering critical aspects of privacy and customer information security.  Special attention will be given to the use of identity theft and pretext to perform account takeover.  Threats to customer information security posed by “information brokers” will also be featured.  Given the nationwide explosion of identity theft and bank fraud, all bank employees need to be aware of the information contained in the Workshop and accompanying Guide as part of any customer information security program in compliance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.  Most importantly, representatives from security, privacy, compliance, human resources, technology, communications, training, and call center staffs should attend.  To register for a workshop please click here.

All workshop participants will receive a copy of the comprehensive training guide: Privacy and Customer Information Security – An Employee Awareness Guide.  This guide is a valuable resource for designing, implementing, or supplementing any in-house training program on privacy and customer information security.  The Guide is available to be purchased separately.  To purchase the guide separately please click here and go to the “Additional Resources and Products” section.

Workshop registration is $249 for ABA members ($299 non-members) and includes the Employee Awareness Guide.  All workshops will be held at hotels convenient to major airports.

In addition to the following schedule, workshops are available upon request.  To arrange a workshop for your institution, association, or conference please contact American Privacy Consultants, Inc. at 703-567-3460.

Privacy and Customer Information Security Threats

Session I examines the benefits and challenges presented to the financial services industry by modern technology.  We will discuss why our customers have concerns about the privacy and security of their assets and personal information.  We will look at the role of privacy policies in addressing those challenges and customer concerns and how to put all bank employees to work as privacy ambassadors. We will address the privacy and security issues presented by the retention of third-party contractors for skip-tracing, debt-collection, and other outside services.  Throughout this session we will discuss the rapidly expanding range of privacy and security threats posed by identity thieves, information brokers and other criminals.  To accomplish this, we will examine web sites and case histories where confidential bank account information, including account numbers, balances, and transaction information is offered for sale.  As the designer of several Federal sting operations to catch criminals stealing account information, Mr. Douglas will provide an insiders view to these threats and crimes.

Identity Theft – Methods, Recognition & Prevention

Pretext Inquiries/Account Takeover – Methods, Recognition & Prevention

Session II focuses in detail on the crime of identity theft.  We will examine current methods and trends and discuss how all bank employees can recognize the warning signs.  Drawing upon his investigative experience and resulting testimony before Congress, Mr. Douglas will provide first-hand knowledge and insight concerning the use of identity theft, pretext, impersonation and other forms of fraud to commit account takeover.  Emphasis is placed on actual case histories.
